The Importance of Hustle

The Importance of Hustle

What’s the difference between winning and losing? Living the life you’ve always dreamed of or dreading the sound of your alarm clock? It’s a matter of hustle. A simple decision to work harder than everyone else. But what motivates a person to hustle? It’s not a switch that can be turned on or off. It’s not a gift that some are blessed with and others aren’t – it’s a passion for what you’re doing.

I’ve always been someone who has worked hard in everything I do, but most of the time I didn’t enjoy it, I just kept working because I knew that’s what it took to be successful. Until, I got into entrepreneurship. Every morning, I jump out of bed, because I love what I do – I live a fast pace life that is always changing and always pushing me to learn. I’m passionate, and because of that, I can outwork anyone, anywhere.

Gary Vaynerchuk is the biggest advocate of this – he believes that the key to success is loving what you do. The video below is what turned me onto Gary and is a prime example of loving what you do, and hustling because of it. In this instance, something fell through at the venue where he was planning on giving his keynote, and because of that, he took the crowd outside into the rain, on the streets of NYC, to give his keynote. That my friends, is the type of shit that embodies a hustler. So, quit going through the motions and getting discouraged when something doesn’t go your way. Things happen, and when they do… move your keynote from that warm, well lit room, to the streets of NYC.

Like the legend Crooked I told me in Portland a few months ago to enter the circle of bosses (C.O.B.) one must have that hustle and grind at the 100. I took this to heart with my photography because I feel like I might be one of the most passionate people entering the professional photo world. I can relate this back to you and what you and Vaynerchuk are saying because you both love what you’re doing. Photography is what I love doing and it’s the hardest thing to keep that hustle going but you just have to stive past all those people that do it just for the money. The money thing is like a chick. If you love what you’re doing it’ll eventually come.

Thanks for posting this video. I never get tired of listening to Gary speak. I was so lucky to get to meet him last week when he did a book signing in St. Louis. He did one of these impromptu keynotes standing on a chair after signing books and taking pictures for almost 2 hours, then invited everyone to join him at a local wine bar. After an exhausting whirlwind book tour, he really didn’t have to spend a few extra hours sitting down at each table and talking with us like we were old friends. He really does live what he preaches.

If only my Flip hadn’t run out of juice at the end of his Q&A session. Disappointed that I wasn’t able to capture every minute on tape.
